My research involves issues and concepts concerning the political economy of communication and culture. Recently, I've focused on two quite different topics: United States public diplomacy and online "prosumption" activities. I am also interested in "medium theory" -- especially the work of Harold Innis.
Among other contributions, I was the Co-Founder and Inaugural Chair of the International Communication Section of the International Studies Association. Also, as the past Rogers Chair in FIMS, each term I organized a public panel featuring researchers from the three disciplines that make up our Faculty: Journalism, Media Studies and Library & Information Science. Some of these panels can be found on YouTube.
