Lindenmayer was active in the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations just prior to the dramatic expansion of peacekeeping efforts in numerous volatile areas, including Somalia and Rwanda. In 1997, she served in the Office of then-U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan as his executive assistant and one of his closest advisers. She eventually was named Assistant Secretary-General level and Deputy Chef de Cabinet. At Columbia, she teachers courses on the United Nations and on peacekeeping efforts in Africa.
