Foner is perhaps the leading authority on political ideology and social change in 19th-century America, particularly the era of slavery, Civil War and Reconstruction. He has authored numerous books on this period of history, most recently, Forever Free: The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction. Foner has also been the co-curator, with Olivia Mahoney, of two prize-winning exhibitions on American history.
