My area of interest is biophysical chemistry. My research focuses on composite, bio-inorganic materials: their formation, their structure on the nano-to-mesoscale, and their bioactivity. Students in my group use microfabrication (primarily soft lithography) and scanning probe techniques (primarily scanning force microscopy) to prepare and characterize hierarchical materials. We are also developing optical instrumentation for in situ measurements of particulate morphology. Finally, we use computational techniques to analyze and model data. On the applied side, we are using our materials as platforms for environmental and biomedical sensing (including heavy metal uptake), and cell activation and adhesion.
