He is a Roman provincialist, specializing in the Roman West. In 2003 the University of Texas Press will publish his book Baetica Felix on wealth and social mobility in Roman Baetica during the early Principate. His research interests involve the archaeology of the Roman economy , as well as the prosopography of the late Roman Republic and Principate. He has published in journals ranging from Phoenix to ZPE, and his book Migration and Economy in Roman Imperial Spain appeared in 1991.
