François Chapleau was born in Verdun (Québec) in 1955. His primary schooling was done in St-Lambert (Collège Anastase-Forget). His secondary schooling was done in three high schools of the Montreal area except for the final two years, which were completed at the Collège Bourget (Rigaud). He completed his CEGEP at the Collège Marguerite Bourgeoys (Montréal). He then completed a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. in Biological Sciences at the Université de Montréal.
After a brief experience as a teacher in wildlife biology at the CEGEP of Saint-Félicien (Quebec), he completed (1986) a Ph.D. in Biology at Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario) studying the evolution and systematics of an important group of commercial fish, the flatfish (sole, halibut, plaice, etc.).
Post-doctoral stays followed at the Australian Museum (Sydney, Australia) examining local flatfish and at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. In July 1989, he obtained a tenure-track position in the Department of Biology of the University of Ottawa and was granted full-professorship in 2000.
