Gavril Bilev, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, holds a Ph.D. from Brown University and a B.A. from Whittier College, both in Political Science. Dr. Bilev specializes in Comparative Politics, with a focus on issues pertaining to democratization and formal institutional design. He will be teaching courses in Comparative and World Politics and related fields. Dr. Bilev’s research interests include democratization, sub-national political regimes, formal institutions, and the inter-branch balance of power. His current research project explores why similar Russian regions vary in the executive-legislative balance of power with important implications for political contestation. Qualitative and quantitative data for the project comes from a year of fieldwork in four Russian provinces. Gavril is a native of Bulgaria, born and raised in the capital, Sofia.
