Dr. Heckman was born in Quebec City and educated in French and English. He obtained his Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Physics from Laval University in 1988.
He dabbled in Oceanography one summer but got seasick.
He went on to obtain a Master of Mathematics in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, during which time he realized he did not want to become a computer scientist but a doctor. During this time he also met his future wife.
George attended Medical School at the University of Toronto (1991-1995), completing his Internal Medicine Residency there in 1998. He completed his Geriatric Medicine Residency at McMaster University in 2000.
Dr. Heckman has been a Clinical Scholar in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at McMaster (2000-2004).
Dr. Heckman was assistant clinical professor from 2004 to 2005, and assistant professor and full-time faculty member since 2006. He completed his MSc in Health Research Methodology in 2006.
