I came to Augustana in 2000. My research and teaching interests are in the areas of crime, deviance and social control, political sociology, historical sociology, and mass media. I have taught many courses, including qualitative methods, crime, corrections, and the community, political sociology, criminology, and fieldwork. Prior to coming to Augustana, I conducted research for Environment Canada, Canada Post Corporation, Correctional Services Canada and Canadian Heritage. I have co-authored articles and chapters on Canadian communications, national identity, and social change in rural areas. I have also presented papers on nationalism, geopolitics and Canadian nation-state formation, scientific research in prisons, globalization and war and fear of crime. My current research projects deal with student use of cannabis, senior citizen's perception of crime in small towns, and consolidations of democracy. I am also a member of Augustana's Crime and Community concentration.
