Dr. Hertzel C. Gerstein's academic interests include: a) using population health approaches to reduce the burden of diabetes in society and to prevent new diabetes; b) measuring the burden of diabetes in Canada; c) using epidemiologic approaches to study the relationship between dysglycemia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease; andd) clinical trials in the prevention & therapy of dysglycemia, diabetes and their consequences.
His research is funded by the US National Institutes of Health, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the Canadian Diabetes Association. Some of his current roles include principal investigator (PI) of the ORIGIN trial, REWIND trial, and ACCORDION follow-up study of cardiovascular prevention in type 2 diabetes; chair of the REMIT trial assessing therapies to promote type 2 diabetes remission, coPI of the EpiDREAM study of dysglycemic & normoglycemic individuals.
