Stormer, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1998 for his work on the discovery of a phenomenon known as the “fractional quantum Hall effect,” where electrons acting together in strong magnetic fields can form new types of particles, with charges that are fractions of electron charges. Stormer came to Columbia after working for 20 years in the Research Area of Bell Labs.
