Lipkin is an authority on the use of molecular biological methods for pathogen discovery and the role of immune and microbial factors in disease. Recently, he oversaw the creation of a massive collection of data to help scientists identify and fight emerging viruses. He also established the first clinic for investigating neurologic manifestations of HIV and headed the team whose research led to the identification of the West Nile virus in the brains of encephalitis victims in New York State in 1999.
