Bio/Research

Dr. Ian Stuart joined UBC Okanagan in 2007 and served as Dean, Faculty of Management until 2009 followed by Associate Dean for Student Experience until January, 2012. Prior to joining UBC Okanagan, he was Director of the School of Business & Information Systems at St. Francis Xavier University (2005 – 2007) and Director of Graduate Programs at the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Business (1999 – 2002).

Dr. Stuart’s areas of expertise include process improvement, quality management and supply chain management. He has taught internationally in New Zealand (Otago University), Australia (Monash University), Thailand (University of Victoria), United States (Bowling Green State University) and United Kingdom & Malaysia (Bath University). He has developed and led executive education for a variety of firms & organizations including LG in South Korea, CMA (Alberta), Purchasing Management Association of Canada and Aerosols International.

Dr. Stuart has performed contract research for the U.K. Department of Industry (DTI) and recently for Industry Canada, where he researched lean implementation challenges in Canadian manufacturing firms. He has worked closely with the High Performance Manufacturing (HPM) Consortium in Ontario and has consulted widely on the use of collaborative consortia to achieve leveraged learning and performance improvement. He is currently working with the Okanagan wine industry on the design and implementation of an innovative sustainability project.

Prior to joining academe, Dr. Stuart worked for 11 years in the Government and the private sector where he was actively involved in new product development projects & strategic planning at Computing Devices of Canada, Atomic Energy of Canada and Esso Resources/Imperial Oil.

Dr. Stuart currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Okanagan Science & Technology Council (OSTEC), the CFA Society (Okanagan), and the Okanagan Summer Festival Society. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Operations Management and also serves on the Editorial Review Board for Business Horizons.
