The Tobias Research Lab is focused on understanding how genes and regulatory elements control the decisions cells make about what cell type they will become, especially in brain tissues.
We're particularly interested in how differences in the regulation our genes in developing tissue can influence neural cell fate choice and lead to different brain-related traits and diseases.
Our lab uses a mix of approaches from developmental biology, computational biology, neurobiology, and molecular genetics to better understand these questions. We specialize in cutting-edge genome editing to test how genetic networks have evolved over time and to manipulate gene regulation in lab-grown brain cells to better understand and potentially treat cerebellar diseases.
