Katznelson is a pioneering theorist of class and race in American politics. His recent works include When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth-Century America and Desolation and Enlightenment: Political Knowledge After Total War, Totalitarianism, and the Holocaust, which received multiple honors, including the 2005 David and Elaine Spitz Prize for the best book in liberal and/or democratic theory.
