Ross Hastings received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame (South Bend, Indiana, USA). He began his career at the University of Ottawa as a member of the Department of Sociology, and later moved to the Department of Criminology where he has taught since 1984.

His main areas of teaching and research interest are crime prevention, youth and youth gang involvement, and innovation and reform in the area of criminal justice policies and programs.
Ross was the Chair of the National Crime Prevention Council of Canada from 1994 to 1997, and later served as a member of the Steering Committee of the National Crime Prevention Strategy from 1998 to 2000. He is currently an advisor on crime prevention to the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. He has also worked closely with a number of police and non-governmental organizations on issues related to strategic planning and organizational change.
He was the co-founder of the University of Ottawa’s Institute for the Prevention of Crime and served as its Director from 2009 to 2012. He has also been Chair of his Department on a number of occasions. He became Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies on January 1st, 2012.
