Dr. Jack Hirsh, professor emeritus in medicine and director of the Henderson Research Centre, is an internationally recognized clinician and scientist in anti-coagulant therapy and thrombosis.
His research group pioneered the discovery and development of low molecular weight heparin, increased the safety and utility of warfarin and heparin anticoagulants, helped to establish Aspirin in treating heart attack and stroke, and developed objective diagnostic testing for diagnosis of venous thrombosis.
A member of the Order of Canada, a recipient of the International Gairdner Research Award, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Dr. Hirsh has developed a world-renowned program for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of thrombosis (abnormal blood clots) and atherosclerosis.
In 1988 Dr. Hirsh established the Hamilton Civic Hospitals Research Centre. He is vice-president, research, of Hamilton Health Sciences, and is vice-president, cardiovascular research, of GlycoDesign, a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company involved in discovery and development of drugs for treating cardiovascular disease, inflammatory diseases, cancer and infectious diseases.
