Dr. Weiner officially retired on June 30, 2011. Now, because he loves the University of Guelph, he continues to come to school every day.
Weiner first taught at the University of Guelph from 1974 to 1976. After attending Teachers College at Queen's, he spent five years at Parkside High School in Dundas, Ontario. In 1982, he was re-recruited by Guelph and had been happily teaching and writing there ever since.
He is currently investigating the effectiveness of state of the art technologies in mathematics education. In particular, he is using Maple for dynamic explorations in class and Maple TA for online testing.
TA incorporates algorithmically generated questions in which student responses are mathematically graded. This expands the capability of computer testing significantly beyond traditional multiple choice, matching, and fill in the blank questions, although these options are available.
Weiner hopes to demonstrate that weekly TA tests, properly designed and used as intended by students, result in statistically significant improvements in understanding and grades. Statistical control issues can make these improvements difficult to assess. He has enlisted statistician Dr. Jeremy Balka and masters graduate Gord Clement to help minimize the statistical issues that are inherent in this type of research and to analyze the resulting data.
