Bio/Research

Dr. Jameca Woody Cooper is an accomplished Counseling psychologist, educator, entrepreneur, author, and civic leader. Dr. Woody-Cooper holds a Ph.D. in Educational and Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri Columbia. Her company Emergence Psychological Services has served the Saint Louis community for the past sixteen years. She is the recipient of a Fulbright Award/Fellowship in Global Health. Dr. Woody-Cooper was awarded the “Salute to Excellence in Health Care” award by the St. Louis American newspaper (St. Louis, Mo; April 2014) in honor of her dedication to healthcare for African American individuals in the community. She was also awarded the Phenomenal Woman award from First Bank and 95.5 The Lou in 2018. Dr. Woody Cooper was nominated for the 2023 RISE Health Care Hero Award for her efforts to improve the lives of patients affected by social determinants of health. Dr. Woody-Cooper has delivered keynote addresses, workshops, and papers at more than 100 conferences. She has been featured in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, NBC, ABC news, WebMD, and USA Today. She is a dynamic mental health expert with a unique perspective on race, urban mental health, and community intervention.

Dr. Woody-Cooper is a past president of the Association of Black Psychologists (Saint Louis Chapter) and President of the Tougaloo College Alumni Association (St. Louis chapter). She is currently on the Board of the Missouri Psychological Association and was appointed to a national committee with the American Psychological Association. She is the president-elect of the Missouri Psychological Association and has served on the board of the Hearing and Speech Center and the Advisory board of CareSTL. Her leadership in these organizations has helped re-engage members and stimulate community outreach efforts. Much of Dr. Woody-Cooper’s community involvement has focused on increasing the awareness of mental health conditions and decreasing the stigma associated with mental health in communities of color.
