Bio/Research
Jane Boulden holds a Canada Research Chair (CRC) in International Relations and Security Studies at the Royal Military College of Canada (Tier II). From August 2000 until December 2003, prior to returning to Canada to take up the CRC, she was a MacArthur Research Fellow at the Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford. Previously she was an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Studies, Queen's University and in 1998-1999 she held the R.B. Byers Postdoctoral Fellowship awarded by the Department of National Defense.
Dr. Boulden holds four degrees from Queen's University: B.A.H., M.A., and Ph.D., all in International Relations, as well as an LL.M. in International Law. She has served as a consultant to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of National Defence, as well as to a variety of research organizations and think tanks, and she has been awarded funding from the United States Institute of Peace, the Carnegie Corporation of New York and was a senior researcher on a project funded by the Ford Foundation.
Much of her recent work focuses on the United Nations, especially UN efforts to deal with conflict in the post-Cold War environment. During her time at Oxford she ran a research project on regional organizations dealing with conflict in Africa, and another on the UN and terrorism. Her recent journal publications include, "Mandates Matter: An Exploration of Impartiality in United Nations Operations," Global Governance, vol. 11, no. 2, 2005; Jane Boulden and Thomas G. Weiss, "Tactical Multilateralism: Coaxing the US back to the UN," in Survival, Fall 2004.
Recent books are: Jane Boulden and Thomas G. Weiss, eds., Terrorism and the UN: Before and After September 11th (Indiana University Press, 2004), Jane Boulden, ed., Dealing with Conflict in Africa: the United Nations and Regional Organizations (New York: Palgrave, 2003); and Jane Boulden, Peace Enforcement, The United Nations Experience in Congo, Somalia and Bosnia (Westport, CT: Praeger, 2001).
