Bio/Research
Janel Hanrahan joined the full-time faculty in the Atmospheric Sciences Department in August 2012. In 2010, she earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics with a strong focus in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and spent the last year working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Alberta. Before graduate school, Dr. Hanrahan earned her B.A. in Mathematics from a small student-centered institution in Milwaukee, Wis., and is excited to return to this type of learning environment where she will have the ability to interact with students on a personal level. She is looking forward to teaching Dynamics, Physical Climatology, Thermodynamics, and various introductory Atmospheric Sciences courses. Because of her own interest in applied mathematics, Dr. Hanrahan is excited to communicate this science to potential future LSC Atmospheric Sciences students who share an interest in math and physics.
Dr. Hanrahan’s research background includes the investigation of Lake Michigan-Huron water levels and their connection to historic climate variability and anthropogenically-forced climate change. In addition to her work on the Great Lakes, she has experience working with a mesoscale model which was used to investigate changes in rainfall intensity behavior in the Canadian Plains region. She plans to continue her research on how the Great Lakes’ are responding to climate change and how this response is translated to precipitation changes downwind. Through dynamical and statistical downscaling, she is also interested in identifying connections between large-scale climate modes and local rainfall patterns and trends.
Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Hanrahan has been enjoying the Northeast Kingdom’s natural beauty. She looks forward to photographing Vermont’s fall foliage and snowboarding at Burke Mountain this winter. When time permits, she also enjoys expressing her artistic creativity through sculpture, oil painting and drawing.
