Dr. Beeler-Marfisi's research interest is in defining the role of macrophages in equine lung disease. Current projects include a geographic epidemiologic study of mild equine asthma (inflammatory airway disease) in Ontario horses to see if, similar to people, there is a cause and effect relationship between air pollution and asthma. Another project includes analysis of the macrophage transcriptome using RNAseq, as well as cytokine measurement to more fully characterize macrophage activation status in mild and severe equine asthma.
In addition to research, Beeler-Marfisi is also a dedicated teacher in Phases 3 and 4 of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program of the Ontario Veterinary College, and in the graduate program of the Department of Pathobiology. As a clinical pathologist, she also participates in diagnostic service, where she analyses laboratory samples obtained from animals in OVC’s Small and Large Animal Health Sciences Centres.
