Dr. Subramanian's program mainly aims at developing new varieties of peach, plum, and nectarine to meet the Ontario fruit industry needs. Apart from continuing traditional breeding that has been in place for a long time at Vineland Station, Subramanian's program also incorporates recent advances in genomics to complement fruit breeding. Subramanian's program is also investigating the genetic resistance to major diseases such as black knot and brown rot in tender fruits. Further study for the post-harvest enhancement of shelf life of these fruits using hexanal in collaboration with other scientists.
