Dr. Jeffrey Pernica is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Head of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease. He joined McMaster in July of 2009.
He completed medical school and a four-year pediatric residency at Dalhousie University (IWK Health Centre), followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Disease at the University of Ottawa (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario). He received his Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the Gorgas Memorial Institute and is certified in Tropical Medicine and Traveler's Health from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
His research interests relate to the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases in lower-resourced settings. He is currently working on projects related to the prevention of respiratory infections in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and the rapid diagnosis of enteric pathogens via molecular methods in Gaborone, Botswana. He is also very much interested in the formal integration of global child health-related topics into undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs.
