Bio/Research

The Control, Instrumentation & Electrical System (CIE) Laboratory in The University of Western Ontario was established by Dr. Jin Jiang in 2003. Dr. Jiang has been with Western since 1991, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. Since 2003, Dr. Jiang has been an NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chair in the area of control, instrumentation, and electrical systems in nuclear power plants.

Dr. Jiang has wide range of research interests, including fault-tolerant control of safety-critical systems (aircraft, nuclear power plants), advanced control of electrical power plants and power systems (combustion, generation, transmissions, and fuel cells), and advanced signal processing for diagnosis applications (manufacturing processes and human hearts). He has published extensively in the above areas with over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and refereed conference publications. He has also co-authored a research monograph in 2004.

Dr. Jiang is also a passionate teacher, and has won several teaching awards in the last few years. Currently, Dr. Jiang has a team of fifteen researchers composed of graduate students, a post-doctoral fellow, and a research associate developing various control system application technologies. His record of HQP training is outstanding. Three of his formal graduate students and one postdoctoral fellow were recruited by other universities in the last five years as faculty members.

Dr. Jiang also has extensive experience working with private industries, federal and provincial funding organizations to support his research programs. These include, Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power; Atomic Energy of Canada limited; Siemens Automotives Canada; Suncor Energy; Imperial Oil; NSERC, AUTO21; and MMO. Dr. Jiang has also served on the program committees of several professional meetings as well as an editorial board of an international journal. He has been invited to deliver plenary speeches in two international conferences. Dr. Jiang is also the Chair of NSERC Grant Selection Committee 335 in 2005.
