Bio/Research

Most important biological processes in bacteria are not done by an individual protein but for multicomponent systems comprised of several proteins. Furthermore, these assemblies are like dynamic machines continuously changing conformations and sometimes also subunit composition. In our lab, we use cryo-electron microscopy combined with molecular biology and biochemistry analysis to characterize the assembly and mechanisms of these macromolecular machines. Ortega lab members work on research projects aiming to understand how the bacterial ribosome is assembled and how important bacterial proteases function.
