Joanna Harrington is a professor in the Faculty of Law and an associate dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Alberta.
Prior to entering the legal academy, Professor Harrington served as the legal officer to a prominent member of the British House of Lords from 1998 to mid-1999, focusing on matters of constitutional reform, including the enactment of the Human Rights Act, devolution and the creation of the Scottish Parliament, and the implementation of the Northern Ireland peace agreement.
Visiting professorships have taken her to Australia, Japan, and the United Kingdom, as well as the Caribbean and South America, and her consultancy experience includes involvement with the human rights training of police, government officials, and judges with the British Council, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Judicial Studies Board of England and Wales respectively. Also active within the local community, Professor Harrington currently serves as the chair of the Alberta Press Council.
