Bio/Research

My general interest is in twentieth-century literatures and cultures, and, although most of my work deals with Canada, I often engage larger North American or diasporic contexts. Of constant interest to me are the cultural texts produced within and through the social, political, and economic processes that have shaped Canada in the twentieth century—particularly the forces of urbanization and migration, the development and diminishment of the welfare state, the making of the nation and the national citizen, the emergence of national cultural industries, and the pressures of globalization. More specifically, my work employs the insights of postcolonial and neo-Marxist theory to query the intersection of labour and class politics; migration, immigration, and diasporic formations; and the politics of mobility.
