Johannes Evelein is an Associate Professor of Language and Culture Studies at Trinity College. He has studied in the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, and the United States. Evelein earned his M.A. in Scandinavian Literature from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Netherlands and a Ph.D. in German Literature from the University at Albany, SUNY. He joined Trinity College in 1997, where he coordinates the German Studies section and teaches in the Guided Studies program.
In his teaching, Evelein frequently connects his own field of German language and literature to other disciplines, which has enabled him to interact with students and colleagues well beyond the scope of “Germanistik”. He regularly designs new courses cross-listed with Jewish Studies, Political Science, History, Philosophy, and the Environmental Science program. His research interest in German Exile Studies has resulted in several courses on narratives of exile and migration. To him, learning a foreign language is like seeing the world anew, which is why he encourages students to open their minds by becoming proficient in another tongue.
