Bio/Research

Dr. Anastasi is the Assistant Director of Hematopathology, and the Medical Director of the Clinical Flow Cytometry area located in the Clinical Hematology laboratory. He rotates on the hemato-pathology sign-out service, interpreting bone marrow biopsies/aspirates, lymph node biopsies, and other hemepath-related material, and on the Clinical Hematology Lab service dealing with body fluid/CSF analysis, clinical flow cytometry and hematology lab issues. He also helps Dr. Vardiman with the evaluation of acute leukemia cases from the cooperative Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) acute leukemia program.

Dr. Anastasi's research interests initially revolved around Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis which he was the first to develop for the evaluation of clinical specimens at U of C. He has been utilizing the technique for diagnostic and research applications including initial diagnostic and classification evaluations of specimens from patients with leukemia, and evaluations for residual disease/effect of therapy. He adapted the technique for correlative studies of morphology and genetics and has been using this for cell lineage studies in leukemia. His recent research interests include the evaluation of a new type of Acute Myeloid leukemia which resembles APL, and he continues to study issues in lineage restriction in normal hematopoiesis and leukemic disorders.
