Bio/Research

John Baxter holds a PhD from the University of Alberta and joined the Department of English at Dalhousie in 1980. He has been a full professor since 1995, and he was chair of the Department from 1995 to 1998.

On the extra-curricular side and following the lead of his children, Dr. Baxter has taken an active interest in sports - minor hockey, track and field, and cross-country in particular.

He and his wife Lorraine have four children, all of whom have attended Dalhousie at one point or another and two of whom completed the Foundation Year Program at the University of King’s College. His off-campus interests currently include Humanities 101 and the Clemente Program, adult learning programs run out of St. George’s Anglican Church. His teaching and research areas include Renaissance literature, poetry and drama, and literary criticism.
