Dr. Kowalchuk’s interests are centered around cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic adaptations and control with exercise and ageing. He studies the mechanisms determining the rate of adaptation of O2 uptake and blood flow following a sudden change in energy requirement in young and older adults using: breath-by-breath techniques for measuring gas exchange (O2 uptake; CO2 output); near-infrared spectroscopy to measure muscle oxygenation; Doppler ultrasound techniques for measuring central and peripheral beat-by-beat blood flow; computer modeling to study the time course of adaptation of gas exchange and blood flow; and blood sampling, muscle biopsy and magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques for studying muscle metabolism.
