Bio/Research

John has been Director of the Executive Seminars on Corporate and Investment Real Estate since its creation by Queen's University in 2004. Since 2000 he has been an assistant professor in the Queen`s School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP), where he teaches commercial real estate to graduate students. He also teaches real estate management in the Queen's School of Business and environmental policy in the School of Environmental Studies.

John`s academic research is directly applicable to the commercial real estate sector, focusing on environmental issues in buildings and the financial analysis of investment properties and development projects. He is currently working on a project investigating the long-term financial feasibility of `green` office buildings. He is also part of a research team in the Queen`s School of Business, evaluating the feasibility of developing a sustainable supportive housing facility and examining options of building it through a public-private partnership.

John consults to the commercial real estate sector on strategic planning, environmental issues and financial analysis; and is a frequent speaker and media commentator on these issues. He maintains a small professional practice offering independent facilitation, mediation and public consultation services, specializing in environmental, planning/land use, and real estate issues and disputes. He has been a roster mediator and program instructor with the Mediation Centre of Southeastern Ontario since its inception in 2003.

John holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science in Planning from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Science from The University of Western Ontario. He holds a Canadian Private Pilot License, and has been an active recreational pilot for nearly a quarter century.
