Bio/Research

The primary research focus of Prof. LaMarre's laboratory is the investigation of mechanisms by which gene expression is regulated in animal gametes and early embryos, how these mechanisms become altered in disease and how they can be manipulated to influence fertility.

Prof. LaMerre is particularly interested in post-transcriptional mechanisms involving small RNAs (miRNAs, endo-siRNAs, piRNAs) and proteins (AU-rich element binding proteins: TTP, HuR, AUF1) that bind to messenger RNAs and alter their intracellular fate (translation, splicing, degradation). Other projects in the laboratory investigate these pathways and the genes that they regulate (eg. cytokines, growth factors) in the eye, skin and ovary, and in the context of cancer.
