My PhD was in 1999 at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in the group of Daniel Loss. Although Daniel primarily works on quantum information these days, my work involved quantum magnetism in one dimension; I looked at the quantum dynamics of topological magnetic solitons. This was exclusively analytic work, much of it involving field theory and functional integrals (fancy path integrals) as well as straight many-body theory with operator methods. Just before I left, I collaborated with Allan MacDonald and Daniel on bilayer quantum Hall systems.
