Dr. Mestman has been in practice for over 35 years. His areas of interest are: Type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetes in pregnancy, gestational diabetes, thyroid disease, thyroid disease in pregnancy, metabolic syndrome, preconception diabetes control, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Dr. Mestman notes that approximately 18.2 million people in the United States have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, about 5.2 million people do not know they have the disease. Preconception diabetes control, aiming to normalize glucose metabolism and other risk factors has allowed women with diabetes to improve neonatal outcome and achieve a perinatal mortality very close to women without diabetes.
