Bio/Research

Joseph was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. He is the youngest of six children and is always happy to show off his nephews and nieces.

Joseph received his BASc in 1991 in the Engineering Physics program at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He went on to complete a MASc degree under the supervision of Prof. Tim Salcudean in the UBC Electrical Engineering department in 1994 where he worked on a Bilateral Motion-Scaling System for Microsurgery . Joseph then joined QLT PhotoTherapeutics, Inc. in Vancouver, where he worked for two years as an engineer in the area of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT).

In 2002, Joseph completed his PhD in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) department at the University of California at Berkeley (UCB). He worked on the Micromechanical Flying Insect (MFI) Project in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines Laboratory with Prof. Ron Fearing.

Joseph recently returned to the UBC Electrical Engineering department where he is currently a Senior Instructor. His areas of interest inlcude micromechatronics and biomimetic robotics.
