Whitford is an assistant professor in sociology and is also affiliated with the Center on Organizational Innovation. He is the author of The New Old Economy: Networks, Institutions and the Organizational Transformation of American Manufacturing, which describes the fundamental restructuring of American manufacturing that occurred in the last 25 years. He has written another book concerning pragmatist social theory, Pragmatism and the Untenable Dualism of Means and Ends: Why Rational Choice Theory Does Not Deserve Paradigmatic Privilege and has published articles on issues of regional economic development. His current work focuses on the social, political, and institutional implications of productive decentralization (outsourcing) in manufacturing industries in the US and Europe.
