As a 'human ecologist' I strive to work critically at the intersection of social and environmental sciences. My interests include: the dynamics of "local" knowledge and its interactions with other global knowledges; political ecology and actor network theories; participatory and action research methodologies; food security and environmental justice (e.g. "fair trade" and community supported agriculture) in developing and North American contexts; understanding and supporting local responses to climate change. I have worked primarily in Kenya and Mali but also have experience in East, West & Central Africa, Central America and Indonesia. I believe in actively supporting students to learn about development through practical means (including through the intensive course I co-teach each May with the faculty of Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya) and make a point to be available to meet with or supervise students and to discuss development issues, world events, good recipes, etc.
