Karen Frederickson, Ed.D. (Arizona State) is Associate Professor of Music, specializing in music education and choral music. She is also the Director of Queen’s Choral Ensemble, a large mixed-voice choir. Dr. Frederickson has taught at all levels and has given choral, vocal, and music education workshops throughout Canada, the United States and South Africa. Dr. Frederickson is the co-author, with Dr. Murray Smith, of Sound Connections: Integrating Science and Music and has published articles in the Canadian Journal of Music Education, The Music Educators Journal, General Music Today, and the 1999 Garland publication Preparing middle level educators: Practicing what we preach. Her research interests include critical thinking, integrated curricula, health education for musicians, spatial visualization, and gender issues in choral music.
Dr. Frederickson is also an accomplished soprano, formerly a singer with the Edmonton Opera Association. She studied with Aksel Schiotz, Louis Cunningham and Noni Espina at the University of Colorado, Katharine Hilgenberg at the University of Michigan, receiving her M. Mus. in 1974 from the University of Oregon. She has taken vocal masterclasses with Martial Singher and Herman Reuter, and sung under the direction of Walter Susskind, Eric Ericson, Elmer Iseler, Helmut Rilling, Richard Bonynge, and other noted conductors. She has presented recitals throughout North America, and at Rhodes University in South Africa. Her most recent project is a collaborative effort with Kristi Allik and Robert Mulder, A (W)hole in One, a multimedia event celebrating the game of golf.
