Dr. Mathews established the Emergency & Critical Care (E&CC) programme at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), where she had an interest in all aspects of this specialty. While establishing procedure protocols, she developed a major interest in kidney function and therapy, fluid therapy, nutritional support, point-of-care testing and above all pain management for the acutely ill and injured small animals. Pain management in this area became a sub-specialty interest for Mathews. Although retired from clinical practice, she is still an active national and international lecturer in the area of pain management for the ill or injured cat and dog.
Based on the emergency admissions and critically ill ICU patients’, requirement for 24 hour care prompted the publication of a manual, now in the 3rd edition, outlining detailed patient examination, diagnostic testing and management protocols. As managing pain is an essential part of E&CC medicine, another publication "Analgesia and Anesthesia for the Ill or Injured Cat and Dog" co-edited by Mathews was published to partner with the E&CC manual.
Throughout her career, Mathews has served on many committees including as the chair of the Global Pain Council of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and as president of the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society (VECCS). She currently serves on various editorial boards.
