Catherine is currently applying human factors and design research principles and methods to the analysis of existing practices and systems and implementation of new technology at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. In this role she has supported a user centred implementation of unit dose and automated medication dispensing equipment at the hospital, redesign of medication preparation rooms to eliminate identified risk contributing factors and is currently supporting design and implementation of an electronic health record. This position was preceded by a year of independent consulting providing human factors, design research and usability evaluation services to a variety of clients. Catherine's interests include interdisciplinary design development, user experience and the application of human factors and design thinking in healthcare environments.
An accomplished project leader with nearly five years experience in safety program assessment, safety culture assessment, management systems development and improvement planning for a variety of nuclear, aviation and military safety programs, Catherine has contributed to the development of regulations, guidance and training programs for government and industry clients in Canada, the U.S.A. and abroad.
Graduate work in 2008-2010 integrated product design and human factors research methods for the identification of risk factors and practical recommendations for medication safety improvement in a pediatric hospital. With this work Catherine revisited a long-standing interest in healthcare and human factors stemming from a degree in Industrial Engineering (UofT, 2003) with a specialty in human factors and interface design, and an undergraduate thesis studying nursing workload at Toronto General Hospital.
