Dr. Kathryn Woodcock is a Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University in the School of Occupational and Public Health and graduate program of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. She received her PhD from University of Toronto, becoming the first Deaf woman to hold a PhD in Engineering.

Bio/Research

Dr. Kathryn Woodcock is a Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University in the School of Occupational and Public Health and graduate program of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. She received her PhD from University of Toronto, becoming the first Deaf woman to hold a PhD in Engineering.

Her research focuses on human factors engineering in designed public spaces and activities, particularly in the domain of amusement attractions, and she is the Director of the THRILL Lab. Her projects include task demand modelling, interface design, and accident and error investigation and analysis, pertaining to guests, operators, and inspectors. She has also studied health and work issues of deafness, disability, sign language interpretation, and accessibility.

In addition to research funded by external agencies including NSERC and WSIB, she is extensively involved in Knowledge Transfer and Exchange activities in the attractions industry including professional training and standards development.

She is a member of the Global Safety Committee of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, and Technical Standards and Safety Authority of Ontario Amusement Devices Advisory Council, and leads the international Rider Eligibility Task Group for ASTM Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices.
