Prewitt, a political scientist, has had held several positions of note outside academia; he is the former director of the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Opinion Research Center and the former president of the Social Science Research Council, among other positions. He has authored or co-authored a dozen books, including Politics and Science in Census Taking, and is completing a historical study of the tortured consequences of the nation’s official racial classification from 1790 to the present.
