Bio/Research

Kifah Hanna is Assistant Professor of Arabic in the Department of Language and Culture Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Middle Eastern Studies in 2010 from the University of Edinburgh in the UK. She is currently at work on a single–authored book manuscript which investigates the literary aesthetics of feminist and nationalist representations in the writings of contemporary Arab women authors.

Professor Hanna’s scholarly research informs her teaching pedagogy as she encourages her students to challenge perceived notions of gender and sexuality in their examinations of Arabic literature, culture, and cinema. Her research and teaching interests broadly include twentieth and twenty-first century Arabic literature especially the writings of Arab women; more specifically the aesthetics of Arab women’s writings on gender and war, postcolonial theory, world literature, Middle Eastern cinema, and cultural studies.
