Hopper, a medical anthropologist and a research scientist, has for decades conducted ethnographic and historical research on psychiatric care and on homelessness, chiefly in New York City. A former president of the National Coalition for the Homeless, his publications include the book Reckoning with Homelessness, a stocktaking of two decades of research, advocacy and theoretical work in that field.
