Marten, an expert on international security issues, is writing a book on nation-states and warlords. Her case studies include the Pakistani tribal areas and Afghanistan, and post-Soviet Georgia and Chechnya. She has written three previous books, including Enforcing the Peace: Learning from the Imperial Past, which analyzes the military and political aspects of peace enforcement operations from Kosovo to East Timor. She has completed two open-source contract projects for the Pentagon.
