Bio/Research

Pianist Kristina Szutor is a native of British Columbia who has made her home in St. John's Newfoundland since 1991 when she joined the faculty of Memorial University's School of Music. She holds a masters degree from the Juilliard School of Music and a doctorate in piano performance from the University of British Columbia. She has concertized throughout Canada and in New York, Georgia, Minnesota, Washington D.C., Spain and Rio de Janerio and can be frequently heard on CBC radio. She is a strong contributor to the new music scene through her many commissions, premiers and recordings. Her first CD of solo piano music entitled Bookends in Time features works from both the beginning and the end of the twentieth century and she has recently recorded a second solo piano album entitled Apr�s Scarlatti which brings together contemporary pieces all written in homage to the Baroque keyboard master Domenico Scarlatti. She can also be heard on soprano Jane Leibel's CD entitled Songs and Sonnets as well as Newfoundland composer Michael Parker's CD Lyre. Kristina has been a juror for Canada's Juno Awards, the Eckhardt-Gramatt� competition for excellence in contemporary music, and the Hnatyshyn Foundation of Canada. She has written and revised a number of articles for the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada and she is also a recipient of the University's prestigious President's Award for Outstanding Research.
