Lari Hakkinen obtained his DDS and PhD degrees at the University of Turku, Finland. After postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia, he joined the Faculty of Dentistry at UBC in 1999. Since 1988, his research has concentrated on the cell and molecular biology of wound healing and periodontal disease with specific emphasis on the expression and function of proteoglycans, integrins and matrix metalloproteinases in these processes. The long term goal is to use the basic biological understanding of the interactions of cells with extracellular matrix to find new tools to better control wound healing.
