Bio/Research

Laura Vandenburgh is an academic expert in art, drawing and art education. At the University of Oregon, she is the interim dean of the College of Design and a professor of art. Through her work as an artist and educator—in drawing, photography, and cut paper— Laura explores systems and environment, posing questions about how people are embedded and implicated in their environments, as subjective bodies that have emerged from, are contingent on, are hosts for and actors within, complex organic and inorganic material systems. Laura can also speak to preparing art students for professional practices.

Laura’s drawing-based work has been widely exhibited including venues in Germany, Canada, Seattle, New York and Portland, and supported by awards and fellowships from Yaddo, Ucross, the Ford Family Foundation, Radgale Foundation and the Oregon Arts Commission. Recent exhibitions include Wolkenschauen, a traveling exhibition in Germany, Now We Are Five at Upfor Gallery in Portland and the Transformed: Paper in Dimension at the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ.

Her studio practice has been supported by awards from the Oregon Arts Commission, the Ford Family Foundation, the Ucross Foundation, the Ragdale Foundation, the Saltonstall Foundation and the University of Oregon.
